The North Providence School Committee voted on multiple items during open session, approving minutes, the consent agenda and a set of agreements and routine items.
Key formal actions recorded in the meeting:
- Tentative agreement with Local 2435, AFT (custodial union). Superintendent Gojo said the committee reached a three-year agreement that will begin after the existing contract expires on Aug. 30, 2025. The committee moved, seconded and voted in favor; the motion carried.
- Tentative agreement with Local 1033 (paraprofessionals, secretaries and teacher assistants). Superintendent Gojo and staff described recruitment and retention challenges for paraprofessionals and behavior specialists and said the contract aims to make the district competitive with neighboring districts. Committee members moved, seconded and voted in favor; the motion carried. Staff said the agreement places pay “around the state average” for these positions and includes an earlier accrual of vacation time for new hires to reduce unpaid recess-period gaps.
- Renewal of the Air Force JROTC memorandum of agreement. The committee approved renewal of the memorandum of agreement for the JROTC program, which the superintendent said is an approved pathway by the Rhode Island Department of Education. Committee members voted in favor; the motion carried. Staff said the program enrolls roughly 30–35 students and is in its second year locally.
- Acceptance of the resignation of Chuck F. Pollock Jr. The committee accepted Pollock’s resignation, effective Jan. 3, 2025, after he said he was elected to the North Providence Town Council. The committee moved, seconded and approved acceptance of the resignation.
- Approval of minutes (open session regular meeting of Nov. 20), approval of the consent agenda, approval of bills and approval of use-of-property requests. Each motion was made, seconded and carried with recorded “Aye” votes and the chair announcing “motion carries.”
Most motions were moved and seconded without roll-call tallies recorded in the public transcript excerpt; votes were announced as “Aye” and the chair declared the motions carried. Where numbers or individual roll-call votes were not read into the record, the meeting minutes packet provided to the committee was referenced by staff.
Nonvoting correspondence noted at the meeting: staff reported receiving an engagement letter from the teachers’ union (Local 920 AFT) reminding the district that the teachers’ contract expires Aug. 30, 2025; staff said negotiations will commence in January and some meeting dates are already scheduled.
No formal amendments to these motions were presented during open session.
