At the start of Monday's Lakewood City Council meeting, staff and volunteers from Friends of PAHA gave a short presentation about Camp PAHA and presented a donation to the city to underwrite camperships.
Nicolette Schoenfeldt, Lakewood Recreation Supervisor who oversees therapeutic recreation programming, described Camp PAHA as a summer day camp for children and young adults with a range of abilities. Schoenfeldt said the camp provides supported field trips, music, art and adapted physical education and that the program is led by staff members Missy Sprague and Kayla White.
Tim Litherland, a volunteer board member for Friends of PAHA, told the council that the nonprofit raises funds through grants, local partnerships and an annual gala to help underwrite camp costs. Litherland said the group provided 24 full camperships during the previous summer so campers whose families could not otherwise pay could attend at no charge. Friends of PAHA then presented a check to the city during the council meeting.
Why it matters: Camp PAHA provides inclusive summer programming and the nonprofit's fundraising reduces barriers to participation for families who could not otherwise afford specialized support.
Quotations: Recreation Supervisor Nicolette Schoenfeldt said Camp PAHA "creates memories and experiences that make a lasting impact on these campers and their families." Litherland said Friends of PAHA is "a non profit organization building awareness for Camp PAHA and providing financial support to campers with disabilities and their families."
