Long Beach swears in three council members; Roberto Uranga chosen vice mayor

Following the swearing-in, the council opened nominations for vice mayor and elected Councilmember Roberto Uranga (Seventh District) by unanimous voice vote after a motion from Vice Mayor Cindy Allen and a second from Councilmember Kerr.
Why it matters: the swearing-in marks the start of new two-year terms for the re-elected and newly elected members and sets the council’s leadership for the coming term. Vice Mayor Uranga will serve as the council’s second-ranking official and is charged with additional citywide duties in that role.
Newly sworn members used their remarks to outline priorities and acknowledge supporters. Vice Mayor Cindy Allen, who was sworn in by her husband, said the last four years included difficult pandemic-era work and thanked public health and labor partners, noting local efforts on homelessness, housing and public safety. "We are charged with listening to your voices and trying to do the best for our community," Allen said during her remarks.
Councilmember Sue Lee Saro was sworn in by State Senator Lena Gonzales. Saro thanked volunteers, campaign staff and family and described work in the Sixth District on parks, libraries and affordable housing investments during her term.
Tanuah Thrash Ntuk was sworn in by Los Angeles City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson. In her remarks she described a background in community development and affordable housing and emphasized priorities including clean energy, public health and economic opportunity in the Eighth District.
Action taken: - Motion/appointment: "Nominate and elect Councilmember Roberto Uranga as vice mayor." Moved by Vice Mayor Cindy Allen; seconded by Councilmember Kerr. Outcome: approved (voice vote).
No formal votes were recorded in roll-call form for the swearing-in itself; ministerial oath-taking was administered and ceremonial remarks followed.
Looking ahead: the council said it will reconvene for regular business in January and noted the city’s annual State of the City address scheduled in mid-January.
