School committee approves Title IX policy edits, tables several policy drafts for later review

The Easton School Committee reviewed multiple policies during its Jan. 9 meeting and approved an edited second reading of ACA (nondiscrimination and harassment) while tabling several other policies for further review.
Committee members and legal counsel discussed who should be listed as the District Title IX coordinator for student complaints and who should be listed for personnel complaints. Legal guidance presented at the meeting recommended naming the assistant superintendent's office as the district point of contact for student Title IX reports and the human-resources director for employee reports.
Committee members asked for grammatical clarifications and an explicit link on the district website to the grievance procedures and the bullying-prevention plan. The committee voted to approve ACA with noted edits: specify "District Title IX coordinator for students: Assistant Superintendent" and "District Title IX coordinator for personnel: Director of Human Resources," correct sentence phrasing in the Title IX paragraphs, and add the grievance/bullying links in the online policy packet. A committee member said the final version would be peer-reviewed once staff incorporates the edits and prior to formal adoption.
Several policies were tabled for later meetings or for further legal/administrative review. Those tabled included student-activity/fundraising policies that require the finance director's input, hazing and alcohol/drug policies that await feedback from the athletic director and nurse coordinator, and a policy on gangs/"secret societies" that committee members asked staff to revisit to modernize language and assess need. Committee members also discussed updates to weapons and discipline policies and requested additional language or legal citation (e.g., Chapter 37H references) be reviewed by counsel before moving ahead.
The committee moved and approved the ACA edits by voice/roll-call as recorded; members acknowledged remaining grammar and link work for staff to complete. Policies tabled will return when the appropriate staff or counsel are available to complete revisions.
