A county staff member said, “Well, this is all about, taking care of the people in need within our community. We will serve some 250 different families with toys today, but overall, some 800 different, children and families will be served as a result of this. This year, we collected over 10,600 toys. Thanks to our community, really helping out. So it's a blessing to live in this kind of community that takes care of the least of those.”
Organizers said the distribution included toys, food and other items, and that Orange County Community and Family Services staff were assisting families with additional needs. A visitor at the event praised local leadership, saying, “The mayor has done a fantastic job serving these families today and a lot of wonderful gifts we're able to give out today.”
Several participants described the event as a community effort. One volunteer said, “At at any given point someone's gonna have a challenge, but not everybody has help with that challenge. And so I think the mayor's toy drive, helps to meet the challenge and put a smile on folks face of taking a burden off of them having to kid toys for their kids.” A parent who received items said she was “very, very, very excited” and thanked organizers for brightening her children’s Christmas.
Organizers emphasized community donations and volunteer support. Attendees also noted volunteers acting as “elves” to help distribute gifts: “Oh, they love it. You know, we all love it, you know, being elves and helping Santa deliver these gifts. That's what it's all about doing this season.”
Event organizers did not specify a breakdown of donated items by category, any outside funding sources, or the locations of future distributions during the meeting.
