THECB digital learning division reports AI-focused summit, webinars and course development

The Higher Education Coordinating Board(THECB) Division of Digital Learning described a series of statewide activities and resources related to generative artificial intelligence and digital learning, including a February digital learning summit, webinars, and an upcoming adapting-to-innovation course.
Digital Learning director Mercayla Torrey said the February digital learning summit drew more than 1,600 registrants and included about 30 recorded sessions and keynotes. Recordings will be posted on OER Texas and the DL Texas summit hub.
Torrey described a continuing AI webinar series. An "AI Empowered" webinar featured lightning talks from Houston Community College, Texas A&M University and other institutions. A March 19 webinar will focus on the THECBagility framework and examples from LTACsubcommittee members. The division also co-hosted an AI and higher education accreditation town hall with the Southern Regional Education Board; a Padlet recording of breakout-room topics will remain open for comments through March 14.
Torrey outlined a project advisory group (PAG) made up of UT Austin, University of North Texas, San Jacinto College and Austin Community College that is shaping a facilitated learning network and a short course on adapting to innovation with core AI essentials. The division plans to add OER components and expects a tentative launch of the course in late 2025 (revised timeline points to August or fall 2025).
Torrey said the DL Texas site was redesigned and the division opened a call for examples of institutional digital-learning innovation plus a fourth biennial OER landscape survey for institutions; the survey will inform a public report due in the fall.
