WFP issues urgent funding appeals for Rohingya and Central Sahel as FAO flags rising food prices

The World Food Programme (WFP) appealed for urgent funding to prevent cuts to food rations for more than 1,000,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and to maintain assistance for up to 2,000,000 people across the Central Sahel, the UN spokesperson said.
WFP told the UN that without new funding monthly rations for Rohingya camps would have to be halved to about $6 per person from $12.50, just as people prepare to observe Eid. To sustain full rations for April, WFP said it urgently requires $15,000,000 for that month and $81,000,000 through the end of the year.
On the Sahel, WFP warned that the lean season is expected earlier than usual and that, without urgent funding, it may need to halve life‑saving food and nutrition assistance for about 2,000,000 people across the Central Sahel in April. WFP said it urgently requires $620,000,000 to ensure continued support over the next six months.
The spokesperson also cited the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which reported that its food price index averaged 127.1 in February, up 1.6% from January, driven by increases in sugar, dairy and vegetable oil prices. FAO also identified 45 countries currently in need of external assistance for food in 2025, including 33 in Africa.
