UN condemns violence in Syria’s coastal provinces; reports continued displacement in northwest Syria

The United Nations said it was alarmed by recent clashes in Syria’s coastal provinces, condemned reported extrajudicial killings and civilian casualties, and warned that escalating communal tensions risk undermining prospects for reconciliation, the UN spokesperson said at a briefing.
The spokesperson said the Secretary‑General ‘‘strongly condemns all violence in Syria and calls on the parties to protect civilians and cease hostilities.’’ The briefing referenced a Security Council update and a statement from Garrett Pedersen, identified by the spokesperson as the UN’s special envoy for Syria.
The briefing also referenced a morning Security Council briefing by Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, on chemical weapons in Syria.
Turning to the humanitarian situation, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) released a report showing a notable decline in displacement since mid‑December, but the spokesperson said that as of January more than 3,400,000 internally displaced people remained in northwest Syria, including nearly 2,000,000 in Idlib and Aleppo governorates. IOM reported that 1 in 5 of those remaining displaced are living in tents or makeshift shelters under harsh conditions.
The spokesperson said IOM plans to assist more than 1,100,000 people in Syria in the first half of 2025 and that IOM issued an appeal for $73,200,000 to meet needs.
No new UN Security Council decision on Syria was reported during the briefing. The spokesperson emphasized humanitarian access and civilian protection as priorities and said the UN and partners continue assessments and aid distributions where security conditions permit.
