Principals, students and union highlight school events; district updates safety and facilities planning

Caitlin Yeras, identified herself as a principal, told the board the district celebrated classified staff appreciation week with lunches and other recognitions and invited the board to upcoming basketball games. Thomas Schnepp, principal at Phoenix Elementary School, and Heather Lowe of Helen Elementary echoed appreciation for classified staff and highlighted school events such as an OBot competition and family engagement nights. Several principals named staff and coordinators by name for their roles supporting students, including Tyreek Moore (BSU coordinator) and Jasmine Casares (Pirates to Raiders coordinator), and counseling staff Tammy Ingwersen, Michelle Carlson, Jordan Ruiz and Angelica Mendoza.
Student representatives gave updates on athletics and student activities. Rachel said both girls’ and boys’ basketball teams qualified for state play; student leaders reported six DECA competitors qualified for the national International Career Development Conference in Orlando. A student noted strong senior-year scholarship and FAFSA application activity, and another praised recent theater and campus events.
Linnea, representing the Phoenix-Talent Education Association (PTEA), reported the union has increased BIPOC representation in leadership and held a high-engagement election for OEA representatives. The association plans to bring rural educator perspectives to the Oregon Education Association representative assembly.
District staff provided several informational updates: superintendent Brett Berry confirmed a previously scheduled ADM Secure Security hearing for March 12 was canceled; the district’s integrated guidance planning (formerly SIA planning) is underway with a meeting next Tuesday at 4 p.m.; and an out-of-state Outdoor Discovery field trip to Shasta Caverns (Lakehead, California) is scheduled for April 25 for insurance notice purposes.
A facilities/safety update noted planned camera and safety feature adjustments at several schools and a crosswalk improvement on Christian Avenue by the middle school during spring break. The district recognized community partners and consultants, including Cynthia Perez and Sergeant Bull, for supporting safety and restorative practices.
