Board approves budget committee appointment, 2025–26 calendar and teacher contracts; selects snow-day makeup plan

The Phoenix-Talent School District 4 Board voted on multiple formal actions on March 5, approving the appointment of a budget committee member, adopting the 2025–26 academic calendar, approving teacher and administrative contracts and selecting an option to make up missed instructional days from winter weather.

The board appointed Mark Kraus to the district budget committee for a three-year term. Kraus introduced himself to the board as a parent and faculty member at Southern Oregon University and described his PTA experience at Tallent Elementary. “I’m Mark Kraus, and I’m a parent of a couple of kids in the school district,” he said. The motion to appoint Kraus passed on a roll call vote.

The board approved the 2025–26 academic calendar as presented. District staff said two corrections from the prior draft were incorporated: Oct. 13 and April 10 are full in-service days rather than half days, and June 5 will be a full day for all schools to better support senior-year scheduling. A director described the calendar as providing the district with built-in snow-day capacity while keeping key events on familiar dates.

Board members approved the teacher and administrative contracts presented in the packet. One member declared a conflict for a listed spouse and abstained from participation as required; the board recorded one abstention and otherwise approved the contracts.

To make up instructional time lost to winter weather the board selected Option 1, which keeps middle school recognition and other senior/end-of-year events on their usual dates while adding a full day on the Friday before Memorial Day and converting a previously minimum day (June 6) to a full day. Board members said Option 1 was chosen to minimize disruption for families and out-of-town guests while restoring required instructional minutes.

The consent agenda was approved with a procedural edit to move item J4 (the budget committee interview) earlier in the meeting so an applicant would not have to leave before being heard.
