JPS highlights STEAM fair, JROTC and targets to double CTE completion by 2029

Cormick described recent events including a districtwide STEAM fair with hands-on exhibits and an invitation for local businesses to learn how to become district vendors. He noted JROTC recognition and a teacher award at Lanier Junior-Senior High School. He also celebrated the Callaway Lady Chargers's state basketball championship and spotlighted coach Adley Sutton and standout player Johanna Wilson.
On district strategy, Dr. Cormick outlined targets dubbed the district's "drive towards '25, '40 '5, '50 '5." He said the district aims to double career and technical education completion from 12.2% for last year's graduating seniors to 25% by 2029 and set additional goals of 45% earning college credit through IB/AP/dual enrollment and 55% seamless enrollment into a two- or four-year program within six months of graduation. "If we are successful, we project that the increase in college going will net our graduates a collective additional 500,000,000 in lifetime earnings," Cormick said.
The presentation included a district timeline for the goals and a note that the district will align strategies and supports to reach the targets. Staff emphasized the importance of curriculum implementation, targeted coaching for teachers, and close monitoring of chronic absenteeism, which the district said increased on a month-to-month basis in January largely because of illness but improved when measured cumulatively against the 10% chronic absenteeism threshold.
A student participating in the STEAM fair was recorded saying, "I choose this project because when I grow up, I wanna be a engineer." The district used the highlights segment to promote social channels and public engagement opportunities.
The board received the update as an information item; no formal action was requested on the strategic targets during the meeting.
