Planning staff reported they did not receive nominations from the public this cycle but had discussed several candidate properties at recent meetings, including properties at 512 N. Curry, 506 Elizabeth St. and efforts by the RCI team. Staff said RCI’s work likely will not be complete before the awards deadline and can be considered next year.
Commissioners emphasized awarding long‑term maintenance and stewardship. One commissioner argued the Benson property is an example of sustained upkeep over decades; another noted the commission has previously given multiple awards in a year and can do so again. The motion to honor Bobby Benson and Jed passed, with one abstention recorded.
Staff said the awards are presented in conjunction with National Historic Preservation Month and suggested coordinating awards timing and public programming. The commission asked staff to retain a list of potential nominees for future consideration and to return to RCI when the project is complete.
