Council adopts Vision Zero resolution to pursue safer streets and grant eligibility

The City Council voted unanimously on March 6 to adopt a Vision Zero resolution committing Canton to a collaborative Safe Streets for All approach.
Mr. Ingram and other staff described the program as a stakeholder-driven, holistic effort that focuses on pedestrian, bicycle and vehicular safety using measures such as improved striping, signage, crosswalks, sidewalk connectivity and other “low-hanging-fruit” engineering fixes. Ingram said participation in the regional planning effort may improve the city’s eligibility for federal and state grant funding intended for safety and transportation projects.
Councilmembers discussed liability questions and whether adopting the resolution imposes mandatory improvements. City attorney and staff guidance clarified that the resolution is aspirational and does not impose additional liability for the city; it creates a framework for planning and collaboration and may help the city seek grant funding for improvements. Councilmember Young, who represented the council at stakeholder meetings, described the resolution as “aspirational” and said it brought new stakeholders together and generated practical recommendations the city can pursue incrementally.
Council approved the resolution by unanimous vote.
