Montgomery County Board of Education advances three superintendent candidates to second-round interviews

The decisions came at a special-called meeting that followed an executive session described by the board as focused on “good name and character.” Board leaders said six candidates were considered in the first round; three were chosen to move forward to a second round of interviews scheduled for March 10, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. in the Leadership Building.
Board President said the panel had “an opportunity to meet 6 exceptional leaders in their capacities and what they do in their districts. This is not the easiest decision for us to make, but we're confident that whomever moves forward will be great candidates to interview again for round 2, to gain more input and insight and knowledge about the work that they do.” The president also thanked HYA, the search consultant: “We thank HYA for hanging in there with us as we did, as they help guide us through this work.”
After returning from executive session — during which the board said no votes would be taken — the board took individual motions to advance each candidate. A motion to advance Dr. Zakarias Byrd was made and seconded and approved by a unanimous show of hands. Separate motions to advance Dr. Harold Wright and Dr. Constance Evelyn were each moved, seconded and approved unanimously. The board then motioned, seconded and approved a final motion formally advancing all three names to round two of interviews.
Board members did not record roll-call vote tallies in the public portion of the transcript; each approval was announced as unanimous following a show-of-hands vote. The board said it had met six candidates in the first round and will interview the three advancing candidates on March 10. The board’s next regular meeting was announced for March 20, 2025, at 5:00 p.m., with a work session immediately following in the same meeting room.
No additional conditions, amendments or dissent were recorded on the motions to advance the three candidates.
