The Greencastle-Antrim School District Board on March 6 approved purchase of Magma Math licenses for grades 6–8 at a cost of $10,950, with funds taken from the district’s curriculum resources budget. The license term will run through June 2026 and staff said the district will begin implementation immediately so teachers can use the platform during this school year and next.
District staff described Magma Math as a platform offering about 15,000 math problems at three difficulty levels with teacher dashboards that allow live monitoring of student work, group assignments and playback of student problem-solving steps. Administrators said the platform can be customized by standard and teacher-created assignments and that early users saw potential for formative assessment and targeted reteaching.
Board members asked whether the district had a second-year price and whether other districts had positive experiences with the product. Staff said vendors often offer early pricing and that at least one out-of-state district had used the product; staff reiterated that teacher assignment—not the product—drives student activity. The motion to purchase the licenses passed by voice vote.
The board directed staff to pilot the platform with middle-school teachers and a small number of high-school teachers who expressed interest, and to report back on teacher experiences and student outcomes.
