Greencastle-Antrim board adopts generative AI policy for schools

The Greencastle-Antrim School District Board of Directors on March 6 approved the second and final reading of Policy 8.15.2, “Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Education,” adopting district-level rules for student and staff use of generative AI.
Board members and staff said the policy adds protections for student privacy and academic integrity and will be followed by building-level administrative regulations and professional development. The board voted to adopt the policy after a second reading; the motion passed by voice vote.
Superintendent (presenter) told the board the second reading incorporated recommendations from staff and now includes explicit language about academic integrity and a live link to the student code of conduct. The superintendent said administrative regulations will follow to clarify appropriate uses at the elementary, middle and high school levels and to provide training for staff.
Board members asked how frequently the policy will be reviewed given rapid changes in AI tools; one member remarked that the district will likely return to revise the policy several times as the technology evolves. The board emphasized that the policy does not attempt to prohibit all AI use but to define appropriate classroom uses and require students to report the level of AI assistance when directed by teachers.
