Board hears update on district reconfiguration; special education placements to remain largely in current schools

Superintendent Brzezinski provided a district reconfiguration status update and outlined next steps as the district implements elementary reconfiguration and related transportation and program decisions.
Brzezinski said teacher staffing work is underway. He told the board that special education program placement will largely remain in the schools that currently host them — including Setting 3, ASD, DCD and EBD programs — and that individual placement decisions for certain Goodview students will be determined by IEP teams to preserve continuity and meet student needs.
The superintendent reported a successful kindergarten open house at Goodview on Feb. 24 and said kindergarten registration will remain open. An administrative recommendation from a working group (preschool considerations, transportation, elementary principals) is to maintain existing start and end times for elementary schools. The rationale: consistency for preschool programming across sites, maximizing instructional minutes and coordinating bus routes districtwide.
Board members raised a logistics question that had been previously suggested — whether parents could drop preschool or kindergarten students at Goodview and have district transportation coordinate from there. Brzezinski said that possibility will require deeper analysis of bus routing and logistics and is not a near-term decision.
The superintendent said reconfiguration items will continue to appear on board agendas throughout the school year and staff will aim to minimize disruption to students and families.
