Kootenai County converts two sheriffs-office positions into a patrol sergeant post

Kootenai County commissioners voted March 6 to convert two existing positions in the sheriff's office into a new patrol sergeant position.
Captain Andy Deak of the Kootenai County Sheriffs Office told the board the change combines two midyear positions to meet supervisory needs in the civil section and that the county auditor provided a cost projection showing a net savings this fiscal year and in future years. "The auditor has provided a cost projection worksheet for that, which amounts to a net savings, this year, fiscally and, future years as well," Deak said.
Commissioners discussed the size of the projected savings during the meeting. "31,000 almost 32,000 is a significant savings so thank you for bringing this," Commissioner Everline said during deliberations.
A motion to approve the position conversions carried unanimously. The board did not attach additional conditions to the conversion during the vote.
The action aligns the sheriff's-office staffing structure to reported supervisory needs in the civil section and, per the auditor worksheet presented, reduces payroll costs in the current fiscal year. The sheriffs office and county auditor were cited at the meeting as the sources of the staffing plan and cost projection.
No further implementation timeline or effective date for the new patrol sergeant position was specified at the meeting.
The board proceeded to other personnel items after the vote.
