Richardson ISD human-resources staff provided an update to the Board of Trustees March 14 on teacher recruitment, retention and compensation initiatives, including paid residency partnerships and alternate certification pathways.
Staff described a paid residency program with Dallas College now in its third year; the district said the model pays residents a modest salary while they complete coursework and classroom practice, and that many residents who complete the program return to the district as teachers. Staff said the residency model gives candidate-teachers practical experience before taking full classroom responsibility.
Other recruitment pathways noted included partnerships with Texas A&M (a program aimed at bilingual certification), Teach For America options focusing on special education and bilingual placements, and supports for internationally trained candidates preparing for required Texas certification exams.
Staff said the district has adjusted recruitment strategies after COVID-era declines in traditional teacher pipelines and is pursuing creative outreach such as targeted hiring fairs and campus-based recruitment. The presentation covered demographic comparisons between student populations and staff and described efforts to improve representation.
No compensation schedule changes or formal contract actions were adopted in the portion of the meeting covered by the transcript. Trustees praised the residency program and asked for information about scale and retention; staff said they would return with additional data and metrics.
