State DOT and city projects reshape Prince Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard; traffic pattern changes set for March

Public Works staff told the Clovis City Commission on March 20 that construction on two major corridors will require shifting traffic patterns this month and is expected to continue through early summer.
Public Works staff said the state Department of Transportation (DOT) project on the Prince Street corridor has used about 352 working days and has about 152 working days remaining — roughly five months of construction. The project contract is approximately $42 million, and staff said the city had already seen about $30 million paid to the contractor. Beginning March 10, traffic lanes will be moved to the outside lanes to allow crews to work in the roadway center; work at the main intersection is expected to require additional centerline work starting about March 24.
The commission noted that the Prince Street project is a DOT project, not a city project, and asked the public to be patient as the state contract completes drainage and roadway improvements designed to address longstanding issues in that corridor.
Separately, the city’s Martin Luther King Boulevard reconstruction — a city-led project funded with grants and described by staff as just over $8 million — remains under construction. Crews have poured curb and gutter and are working base course. Staff said paving is planned from Deborah Street north to 20th Street next week to reopen that portion; beginning March 17, a closure from Deborah Street south to Seventh Street will allow crews to remove pavement, widen the roadway, and pour new curb and gutter. Staff estimated completion by the end of June or beginning of July, subject to weather.
Commissioners and staff urged residents to remember that local businesses along construction corridors remain open and to support them during detours. City staff also noted public service announcements will provide up-to-date traffic advisories.
Why it matters: Both projects affect daily travel, drainage and commerce along major city corridors. The Prince Street work represents a large state investment in local infrastructure; the MLK Boulevard project is a city initiative intended to widen and modernize a major north–south route.
What’s next: Expect revised traffic patterns starting March 10 and more concentrated intersection work around March 24 on Prince Street; MLK Boulevard lane closures and reconstruction activity will intensify March 17 with an anticipated late June/early July reopening if weather cooperates.
