SAN FRANCISCO — The Historic Preservation Commission on Jan. 15 reviewed preservation alternatives for a proposed redevelopment at 530 Sansom and 447 Battery Street that would replace the Jones Theaterback Cofni Company building at 447 Battery with a new fire station and an accompanying mixed‑use tower. The hearing was a review for the adequacy of alternatives to demolition; no final decision was made.
Planning staff (Jonathan Vimmer) framed the commission’s role as reviewing whether the project sponsor had studied a reasonable range of feasible alternatives for preserving the Article 10‑listed building. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill architect Mark Schwetman and the project sponsor presented a series of alternatives, and staff and commissioners questioned the technical and legal pathways that would be necessary to retain the landmark while achieving the project goals.
