Dimmit County sports complex nears building completion despite budget numbers disputed by commissioners

County staff told the court that construction of the Dimmit County Sports Complex remains on schedule, with major buildings expected to be finished by November and a punch-list date for late November.

An update described the project as roughly 50% complete, with three primary buildings under construction (two concession stands and a gym) and remaining work involving turf installation and site finishes. Staff said transformers and primary power infrastructure had been installed and that the architect and contractor were coordinating deliveries and punch-list work.

Commissioners questioned budget numbers. One commissioner said the county has paid $11,600,000 to date; others discussed whether the authorized amount was $13.4 million (tax note) or $15.05 million in total, with different speakers citing both figures. Staff and commissioners acknowledged a lack of clarity in the transcript about the remaining budget balance and said department financial staff (Mr. Pereira, named in the update) would provide further accounting.

Commissioners also discussed ancillary issues: resolving water-pressure concerns (city water supply and the golf course’s usage were mentioned), storage of purchased equipment awaiting installation, and logistics for upcoming construction tasks that might be delayed by forecast rain. One commissioner suggested reconsidering the site’s public name (Dimmit County Sports Complex vs. a recreational center) but noted the name was previously approved by commissioners in 2023.

The court approved the project update as presented and recorded a voice vote in favor of moving forward with continued construction and oversight. Commissioners asked staff to provide clearer budget documentation at a future meeting.
