Trustees heard details of a planned pop-up pantry to operate from the library's Ground Floor in partnership with the Gardner Community Action Council (CAC).
The library director, Christine Barbera, said she and staff met with Julie from the Gardner CAC about using the library basement as a pop-up pantry. Julie inspected the space and favored the old town clerk’s office area for flow; Barbera said Gardner CAC will bring volunteers and its own coolers and will manage food distribution. The pantry will offer fresh fruit and vegetables, canned and dry goods and occasional desserts; recipients will not be required to provide proof of income or immigration status.
Barbera said Gardner CAC collects minimal demographic information on a voluntary form only for grant reporting and program planning; forms will be available at the library for pickup as well. She said the pantry organizers already have board-of-health approval through Gardner’s arrangements with the City of Gardner and do not expect the library to provide refrigeration or other equipment — the CAC will bring what is needed.
Trustees asked about volunteers; Barbera said CAC will supply volunteers but that library volunteers and town groups could help if requested. No date was set; Barbera said she would follow up next week to set a schedule and will coordinate with town health officials and Hub House, the senior center and other community partners to distribute forms and publicize the service.
No formal action was required; trustees expressed support and requested regular updates on scheduling and logistics.
