Speakers highlighted a coordinated campaign that includes Gulf Shores and Orange Beach tourism, emergency management, local lifeguards and other partners. The proclamation urges residents and visitors to check weather and surf conditions daily, swim near lifeguards, sign up for daily surf condition text alerts, learn how to escape rip currents and heed beach warning flags.
County officials and partners said the Beach Safe campaign began in 2022 and includes a broad coalition from the National Weather Service to volunteer fire departments. County staff singled out Jessica Waters for coordinating campaign partners and urged media partners to help distribute messages to nonlocal markets so visitors are aware of surf conditions before they travel.
The commission adopted the proclamation by motion and vote; commissioners praised lifeguards and first responders and noted demonstrations and community outreach conducted in advance of the summer season.
