Board members debated a policy committee recommendation that would require a board member to notify the superintendent at least 24 hours in advance before asking that an item be pulled from the consent agenda.
Lisa Hathaway, a board member who described the 24-hour-notice proposal as a fairness measure for staff, said the goal is to avoid pulling items minutes before meetings and to give staff time to gather additional information when needed. Other board members raised concerns about whether such a rule would prevent them from raising legitimate, last-minute questions. One member said items can legitimately arise just before a meeting and expressed reluctance to limit a board member’s ability to request removal.
District staff and a policy committee presenter said the committee discussed the proposal and agreed to bring it before the full board; however, the specific recommendation document had not been uploaded to the meeting materials. Committee members recommended that the board consider it at the July meeting, and board members acknowledged that the item will be taken up then so members can study the language and intent.
Ending
The board did not take a final vote on the 24-hour-notice proposal at this meeting; the item will be reviewed at the July board meeting after the recommendation is uploaded and distributed to board members.
