Hanover Area superintendent announces retirement; will remain through year’s end

Superintendent Nathan Barrett announced his retirement to the Hanover Area School District Board of Education at its May 22, 2025, regular meeting, and the board accepted the announcement.

Barrett told the board that he must step back from his role to focus on his family’s health and that the district’s finances and programs are in a stronger position than when he arrived. "I need to take a step back from my role and take better care of my family," Barrett said.

Barrett reviewed district accomplishments he attributed to staff and the board, including restoring the district’s fund balance from a six-figure deficit to a multi‑million-dollar position, increased extracurricular enrollment, facility upgrades and mental‑health supports. He credited central administration, teachers and outside counsel with helping stabilize finances and secure grant funding.

Board leaders said Barrett will continue in his role through the end of the calendar year. A board member noted Barrett remains under contract and will continue to pursue grant opportunities for the district; the board confirmed he will serve through Dec. 31, 2025.

Barrett and board members highlighted several recent and ongoing projects that he helped advance, including stadium work, refinancing and bond actions and an elementary consolidation plan that the board discussed at the same meeting. The district’s leadership said Barrett will remain involved in executing those initiatives while transition planning proceeds.

Barrett’s announcement came during the public portion of the meeting after routine agenda business. The board did not announce a successor at the meeting and gave no timeline for an internal or external search.

He closed his remarks by thanking staff, administrators and the community for their support during his tenure.
