Butler University outlines Gateway Project expansion to MDC; neighborhood groups express support

Butler University representatives provided an informational presentation to the Metropolitan Development Commission on May 21 about the Gateway Project, a multi-phased campus expansion that includes reuse and new construction on the former Christian Theological Seminary site.
Attorney Brian Tuohy, representing Butler University, told commissioners the project would relocate the university police department to the seminary property, build parking and construct new academic space for the proposed Founders College and the College of Education. Tuohy said the university previously purchased the 32-acre seminary site and that the plan follows earlier approvals, including reuse of Jordan Hall as a boutique hotel and construction of a presence house on Sunset Avenue.
Tuohy said neighborhood organizations had reviewed the proposal: "The Butler Tarkington Neighborhood Association voted unanimously to support this. The Midtown Community Association voted unanimously to support this. The Christian Theological Seminary sent a letter in voting it to support it." President Dillon thanked Tuohy and asked to be kept updated as future petitions move through the commission.
The presentation was informational; no formal action was taken at this meeting. Tuohy said further steps on zoning and site plans are expected to return to the commission in future hearings.
