NRC tells St. Charles council Waterford Unit 3 met safety objectives in 2024; agency will maintain baseline oversight in 2025

Kent Chambliss, a regional representative of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, briefed the St. Charles Parish Council on the NRC’s 2024 assessment of Entergy’s Waterford Unit 3 generating station.
Chambliss summarized the NRC’s two-part review process—direct on-site inspection and performance indicators—and said the agency issued 15 findings in 2024, all classified as green (very low safety significance). One performance indicator briefly reached white status because the unit experienced unplanned down time beyond expected levels; the NRC conducted a supplemental inspection and concluded Entergy addressed the underlying issues, returning the indicator to green.
Based on inspection results and performance indicators for 2024, Chambliss said the NRC concluded Entergy operated Waterford 3 in a manner that preserved public health and safety and recommended the plant receive the baseline inspection effort in 2025 unless performance degrades. Chambliss said NRC inspection reports and performance indicators are available on the NRC website.
