St. Charles Parish celebrates groundbreaking for first Bethune Park improvements in 25 years

St. Charles Parish officials and residents on May 19 celebrated the groundbreaking for Phase 1 improvements at Bethune Park, located at 301 Bethune Street in Norco.
Parish President Jewell announced the project at the council meeting, saying the work represents the first improvements at the park in about 25 years. He and other speakers said the upgrades will add amenities and improve the park for local residents.
A parish parks official described planned field changes: the large field will be reduced to about 200 feet and a smaller field in the back will be approximately 200 feet, reconfigured primarily for softball. The work will include new fencing and two new backstops designed for 7-, 8- and T-ball as part of a multiuse layout. Speakers also said the project will include other amenities but did not provide a full list of features or a construction schedule at the meeting.
Council members and parish staff did not take a formal vote on the park improvements during the May 19 meeting; officials presented the project as an announced capital improvement and ceremonial groundbreaking. No funding ordinance or construction contract for the Bethune Park Phase 1 work was presented for council action at the meeting.
The announcement followed other parish business at the council chambers and included an invitation for residents to view the site and photographs after the proclamation portion of the meeting.
