Board reaffirms University‑area parcel as preferred cemetery site, advisory committee to continue outreach

The Snyderville Basin Cemetery District board reaffirmed its previously selected preferred site near the UOP (University area) and directed continued outreach after an advisory committee meeting highlighted concerns about trails, parking and visual impacts.

Pete, who chairs the advisory committee, reported that representatives from the UOP, the Charles Foundation, the county open‑space director (Jessica Kirby) and other stakeholders attended a subcommittee meeting. He said stakeholders worried about the site’s effect on the “sense of arrival” to the UOP and on view corridors, and raised concerns about trail routing and parking overflow during services. Pete said the district offered to reimburse or relocate one single‑track trail about 750 feet in length so it would lie outside the cemetery boundary, provided the reroute did not increase trail difficulty.

Pete described the district’s intent to be “low impact,” noting initial operations could serve many years on a small footprint and that about 1,000 traditional burials fit on an acre under standard measures. The advisory committee also discussed hydrology and drainage, spring protections, and the need to coordinate with the health department and other agencies for due diligence and any conditional‑use approvals.

The board moved to reaffirm the UOP area as the district’s preferred site, with staff and the advisory committee to continue negotiations on boundary adjustments, trail rerouting and parking solutions. Directors said they will later refine a development agreement or master plan that would show staging, access, markers and other design details. The motion to reaffirm passed.
