Senator Terry Rice, presenting House Bill 1196 on behalf of Representative Sandy Maddox, told the committee that HB 1196 implements a local decision in Montgomery County to split the sheriff and tax-collector offices. Rice said the county quorum court unanimously approved the change.
“Again, as we've done many, many times, this is where the county has decided to split the sheriff and tax collector,” Rice said. He described the bill as straightforward and said he would be glad to answer questions; none were asked and no public testimony was recorded.
The committee moved to pass the bill; the motion carried by voice vote and the chair announced passage. The transcript does not include a roll-call tally.
