The board heard a report on English-language learners and on a regional Student Success Ready Network intended to track and individualize student learning.
Mister Newton, identified in the update as Reeds Spring’s special services director, led a discussion about English-language learners (ELLs). The presenter said the district’s ELL population rose from 23 students previously to about 36 students and that the district is considering ways to expand staffing and supports to meet language and learning needs. The presenter described the students as “very bright” while also noting language barriers that require classroom supports.
The update also noted the district’s participation in a Student Success Ready Network, described by Dr. Kai as a regional collaboration to monitor student learning over time beyond single annual tests and to deliver more individualized instruction. The meeting presenter said the network aligns with the district’s Vision 2030 emphasis on individualized learning.
As part of staffing adjustments, the board reported creating a job description for a teacher of deaf and hard-of-hearing students, set at a half-time FTE; the presenter said that shift of existing staffing carries no additional financial cost. The presenter said more classroom support for language learners was a recurring theme in one-on-one feedback sessions with teachers.
No specific hires were announced at the meeting; the discussion centered on planning and potential staffing expansions.
