Nike Base pavilion work underway; $98,000 drainage grant and demolition planning discussed

Staff reported a recent award of $98,000 to improve drainage at the Nike Base site; the grant was described as intended to address surface drainage and support the pavilion/complex area and related improvements. Staff said the grant award letter had recently arrived and the money will be used to scope and implement drainage improvements tied to the pavilion and Berlin-age center area.

On a separate but related capital issue, staff said demolition of an old building (referred to in the meeting as the Berlin Age Center) requires a clearer scope of work and a new RFP. That process must account for asbestos abatement, foundation removal options and the cost of demolition; staff reported the person who would normally write the scope is retiring in about 28 days and the town needs to assign the task to complete contract documents. Town staff said they would prepare a demolition scope and obtain contractor pricing before issuing a formal bid for removal.

Committee members asked whether demolition and asbestos abatement could proceed this construction season; staff said they will prepare scope documents and engage a demolition contractor to produce an accurate cost and timeline. No formal vote was taken.
