City staff brief committee on DoD spouse-employment partnership, Visit El Paso app and March Borderplex veterans expo

City staff updated the Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee on Jan. 16 about several outreach and partnership items: the city’s new partnership with a Department of Defense spouse-employment program, collaboration with Visit El Paso to feature veteran events in its app, and plans for the Borderplex Veterans and Family Caregiver Expo in March.
Paul Albright, chief military officer for the Division of Veteran and Military Affairs, said staff will travel to Washington, D.C., at the end of January to engage with the DoD Spouse Employment and Career Opportunities program and to bring ideas back for local military-spouse employment initiatives. He said the city expects to leverage national resources to connect military spouses with local and virtual employment opportunities.
Albright also reported that Visit El Paso will host a veteran/military tab in its app and that the city will push veteran events and calendar items to that platform. Staff asked committee members to continue submitting events to the Division so they can be shared via Visit El Paso and the city’s veteran resource page.
Staff previewed the Borderplex Veterans and Family Caregiver Expo, planned for March at the Starlight Event Center. The expo will be free and open to the public, with 20–50 vendor tables expected and a mix of national, state and local panelists. Albright asked committee members to hold March 21–22 for the event and said invitations to panelists would be distributed in the coming weeks.
Other items discussed included the committee’s annual council briefing scheduled for April 28, 2025, and a planned veterans needs assessment that staff said is unlikely to be completed in 2025 because procurement and budget processes are required for a professional survey; staff estimated such an assessment could be feasible in 2026.
No formal votes were taken on these informational items; staff asked committee members to assist in outreach and share local event information for consolidation on city platforms.
