The Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee voted 7–1 on Jan. 16 to instruct city staff to draft a resolution amending the enabling resolution to change the committee’s name to the "Veterans Advisory Committee."
Ron Jackson and other members raised the issue to reduce public confusion between the committee and the federal Department of Veterans Affairs. George Esser moved to direct the Military and Veteran Affairs office to prepare the amendment for council, and the motion was seconded and carried by a recorded voice vote with seven members in favor and one opposed. "That is my motion," the mover said; staff confirmed the action would be presented to City Council at the next available meeting.
The motion directs the Division of Veteran and Military Affairs to draft the resolution amendment and submit it to City Council for review and a vote. Committee members acknowledged that the change would not alter the committee's duties but would simplify public communications.
By committee direction, staff will prepare the draft amendment and place it on the next available Council agenda for consideration.
