Commissioners discuss allowing city residents to use fairgrounds for 4‑H livestock; county attorney recommends city variance or exemption

Sherman County commissioners discussed the possibility of allowing residents who live inside municipal limits to use the county fairgrounds to raise 4‑H livestock and heard from a resident volunteer who offered to pursue the necessary approvals.

A caller, identified in the meeting as Patty Eckhart, asked whether people living inside the city limits who lack space to raise 4‑H animals could use the fairgrounds. Commissioners said they had discussed the idea with county staff; county attorney Jake Kling told the board the county would need to approach the city commission for either an exemption or a variance to permit that use. Eckhart said she would spearhead the application process, but she and commissioners said it probably would not be ready for the current year and could be considered for the following year.

Commissioners also discussed operational details: smaller animals such as sheep, goats and pigs would likely be raised locally from mid‑April through August, while cattle (steers) would require longer-term arrangements (about nine months). Board members noted horses may be less likely to be kept at the fairgrounds year-round because of existing arrangements. There was no formal motion recorded to change policy at the meeting; commissioners directed follow-up with the city commission and county staff.
