The Coffey County Board of Commissioners approved a lease allowing the county to place a radio communication tower on a 75-by-75-foot tract at 556 Old Highway 50 in the City of Lebo. The lease price is $100 per year and, as discussed in the meeting, the term in the drafted agreement is 40 years.
Emergency management staff recommended the lease and the county attorney approved the agreement as to form, county leaders said. Commissioners raised questions about the length of the lease and whether the county should pay for a tower sited on city property that will benefit the local community. One commissioner asked if cellular or other commercial tenants could later lease space on the tower; staff said the county would receive any rental revenue from third-party tenants subject to approval.
Commissioners said the tower increases radio coverage for first responders in remote areas and improves countywide communications. Commissioner McCurry moved to authorize the chairman to sign the lease; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. The board instructed staff to circulate the final executed document to commissioners.
