Polk County to replace aging PC Maps with new web mapping application

Eric McAvoy, a member of Polk County’s GIS team, told the Polk County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 24 that the county’s public mapping service, PC Maps, is at end of life and will be replaced by a new web mapping application built on Esri’s JavaScript API.
The change matters because PC Maps is one of the county’s most heavily used online services — McAvoy said it has recorded 207,433 public views since August 2021, an average of about 196 views per day, and 42,438 internal sessions — and recent updates to web browsers and retired software packages have begun to break functionality such as printing.
McAvoy said the current PC Maps implementation relies on legacy components, including the Dojo JavaScript package and an older Esri API whose supported lifecycle has ended.
