Rapid City Stevens FFA horse evaluation team named national champions

The Rapid City Stevens FFA horse evaluation team won the national championship at the national FFA convention; the board recognized the team and members at its meeting.
A presenter at the Rapid City Area School District 51-4 meeting told the board that the Rapid City Stevens Future Farmers of America horse evaluation team was named national champions at the National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis.
The presenter said the competition included participants from 48 states and 190 individuals in the horse evaluation contest. Team members listed in the presentation included Patty Timmons (senior at Stevens High School), and 2024 Stevens graduates Kyva Coleman, Ethan Hendricks and Elliot Hendricks. The students competed together representing Rapid City Stevens FFA for three years. Their advisor is Jenna T. Hendricks, who has taught agricultural education at Stevens High School for 10 years.
Elliot Hendricks received specialty recognition as fourth-place individual in performance classes and 10th place overall. The presenter said the Stevens team is the first from South Dakota to win the event.
A team member explained the horse evaluation contest for board members, describing classes such as halter (conformation) and performance events where riders complete courses and judges score movement, style and effectiveness.
Board members offered congratulations and praised the variety of student talents represented across the district.
