Huron CTE students expand career experience through job-shadow days; FFA and CDE activity grows

Students and CTE staff reported on program activity and community partnerships at the Jan. 13 Huron School District Board of Education meeting, detailing expanded student participation in FFA leadership events, career-development event sign-ups and job-shadow experiences with local employers.
Senior Hannah Schoenfelder updated the board on FFA events, noting that new leadership encouraged participation in leadership development events (LDEs) and that a team reached state competition for the first time under new chapter leadership. “We had 1 team go to state this year, and they placed decently well, especially for their first time ever competing in this,” Schoenfelder said.
CTE instructor and coordinator Jolene Konichnie (presented in the packet as applying for an ELA grant) and CTE staff reviewed a career shadow program held on an early release day. Students spent the day at local employers to observe jobs they may pursue. One senior, identified in the meeting as Blut, described shadowing at Dakota Land Federal Credit Union and said the experience increased her interest in finance and business and that she hoped to return to work locally after college.
The CTE report listed more than a dozen community partners who hosted students, including Merle Norman, Double A Motorsports, Huron Veterinary Hospital, Dakota Land, HRMC, HMMI, Huron Police Department, Moose Electric, Ace Realty and Dakota Family Dentistry. The district also posted photos from the Dec. 11 job-shadow day on the district website.
Why it matters: employer partnerships provide applied learning opportunities, help students refine career interests and strengthen ties between schools and local industry. The report also noted upcoming events—CTE month in February and a career fair April 30—where the district plans to showcase CTE students and recruit more business partners.
Ending: CTE staff said the program will continue career shadowing in the spring and encouraged local businesses to register for the April career fair.
