Providence recreation leaders review 2024, set 2025 goals; soccer partnership, swim and basketball expansions highlighted

The Providence Recreation Department reviewed 2024 accomplishments and set program and operations goals for 2025 at the Recreation Advisory Board meeting on Feb. 10.

Director Holland of the Providence Recreation Department summarized the year-to-date figures and organizational changes, telling board members the department is piloting online registration and facilities-management tools and has begun converting participants into formal “members.” He said the system pilots and new hires will support expanded programming in 2025 and improve recordkeeping for maintenance and rentals.

The report said total visits to Providence recreation centers in 2024 were “just a little under 18,000,” averaging roughly 60 visits per day; the department is using that attendance data to guide program placement and staffing. The department also cited summer-camp data showing an average of 45 campers per day and an attendance-to-enrollment rate of about 63 percent, which staff said they plan to address by changing registration and pricing policies.

Why it matters: department leaders told the board they now have two years of usable participation data and new digital tools that let them track facility rentals, maintenance requests and program registrations. Staff said those capabilities should let them target outreach, identify underused sites and reduce single-point failures when individual staff are absent.
