Finance committee approves tax abatements, delays appointment vote to Jan. 27

The Cranston City Council Finance Committee approved real-estate and motor-vehicle tax abatements on Jan. 13 and voted to continue consideration of Mayor Hopkins’ appointment of Daniel Marcinko to the tax assessment board of review to a special finance meeting on Jan. 27.
Committee members said there were no substantive updates to collective bargaining agreements with Teamsters Local 251 and Laborers Local 1322; those matters were deferred to a later meeting for further discussion. Committee members took roll-call votes to approve tax abatements and motor-vehicle abatements; the clerk recorded affirmative votes from Councilwoman Graziano, Councilman Andujar, Councilman Ritz, Councilman Traficante, Councilwoman Horayan, Council Vice President Wall and Council President Marino.
Why it matters: Tax abatements reduce assessed liabilities for property owners and vehicle owners and are routine items handled by the finance committee. Continuation of the mayoral appointment means the committee will reconvene to consider the candidate next week.
The committee moved the mayoral appointment to a special meeting on Jan. 27 and instructed staff to provide any outstanding materials necessary for committee review. There were no votes or updates to collective bargaining agreements at this meeting; the chair said negotiations reported no new changes to bring before the committee.
