Superintendent Horsley says district is addressing student behavior and staff safety

The superintendent said the session included “a lot [of] discussion surrounding behaviors and some of the challenges that we're continuing to see” and emphasized ongoing efforts to provide interventions and supports.
Horsley said the district is committed to evaluating evolving circumstances and making sure “our faculty and our staff feel safe and supported in our schools.” He added, “it breaks my heart to think that somebody would not feel safe in their own classroom space.” He credited instructional leaders for coaching and feedback after describing a recent observation and evaluation at Grainger High School by his principal, which Horsley said led to goal-setting to improve instruction and student engagement.
Horsley described his own classroom practices in brief: he said he teaches a first-period class and is focusing on making sure students have opportunities to participate. He thanked teachers who attended the Madison Junior High session and said he appreciated the chance for “excellent conversations” with school instructional leaders.
The superintendent also noted the district is entering the legislative and budget cycle. He invited the public to the next board meeting for a fuller report, saying, “If you wanna hear a full report on that, chime in to board meeting next week.”
Horsley opened the short update by noting the location and timing — he was at Kearns High School shortly before a district concert — and closed by encouraging staff to stay safe and supported as the district moves into spring planning.
