Grand Portage Band seeks exemption for off-reservation Cook County land; committee lays bill over

A bill to exempt seven fee parcels owned by the Grand Portage Band of Ojibwe in Cook County from state property taxes was presented to the committee and laid over for possible omnibus inclusion.
House File 967, presented March 6, would exempt seven fee-simple parcels in Cook County owned by the Grand Portage Band of Ojibwe from state property tax. Reid Labeaux, attorney and lobbyist for Grand Portage, told the committee the County brought the issue to the band's attention and that statutory language is required to exempt those off-reservation parcels.
"There are 7 parcels of fee land that are owned by the band in Cook County that are off the reservation. The county simply didn't want to assess property taxes on those parcels. But the only way to accomplish that is by having this law change and exempting those parcels from state property tax," Labeaux said.
Representative Davids moved House File 967 for possible inclusion in the omnibus tax bill; the committee laid the bill over for further consideration. No amendments were offered during the hearing.
