Board backs letter supporting House Bill 3552 to create regional career centers

The Yamhill County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a letter supporting House Bill 3552 on March 6, a bill the board said would help establish and fund regional career centers to address local workforce shortages.
Commissioner Starett, who brought the item to the board, described shortages of paramedics and diesel mechanics and said the county has invested in workforce training projects in the West Valley for several years. "We have a deficit of paramedics, not only statewide, but in this community," Starett said, and added the bill is "designed to focus on fire safety, to train up young people who will go into that line of work."
Commissioners said the regional career center model could help the ambulance service area by producing trained EMTs and paramedics and support agricultural employers that rely on diesel mechanics. The board agreed to sign the letter in support and the motion passed unanimously.
The letter will be filed as the county's formal input on HB 3552 and county staff will transmit the signed document to the Legislature.
