Eaton County sheriff reports multi-jurisdiction pursuit, arrests and wins approval for state traffic-enforcement grant

Undersheriff Jeff Cook reported to the Eaton County Board of Commissioners on recent law-enforcement activity, including a vehicle pursuit that injured a deputy, several arrests related to stolen vehicles and break-ins, and multiple investigations forwarded to the prosecutor.

Cook said one of the county’s deputies was struck during a pursuit in Delta Township the prior night; the deputy was examined at a hospital and is "sore" but had no serious injuries, Cook said. The pursuit involved a stolen vehicle; the suspect’s six-year-old son was located in the room where the suspect had been staying and was turned over to family after Child Protective Services and deputies coordinated care.

Cook detailed several other incidents in February: an attempted break-in at Puff Puff Tobacco where video linked two juveniles from a traffic stop to the store; a domestic violence incident on Barnes in which a suspect with mental-health concerns fled and was arrested after MSP assisted; weapons and discharge incidents under review by the prosecutor; carrying-concealed-weapon and OUI/hit-and-run cases involving child endangerment; and multiple stolen-vehicle reports concentrated in Delta Township.

During the Sheriff’s Office report Captain Block explained a request to apply for a state grant through the Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) for targeted traffic enforcement. The grant reimburses overtime for specific enforcement campaigns (seat-belt, impaired driving, distracted driving and speed enforcement) and permits purchase of traffic-related equipment. Captain Block said Eaton County logged roughly 360–380 hours on the program last year and plans to apply for 440 hours this year, with the increase tied to current staffing levels and training schedules.

Officials said the county will request two lidar units, one thermal imaging camera for accident investigation, and LED warning triangles under the equipment allowance of the program. The OHSP must approve equipment requests; if approved the county buys the equipment and is reimbursed. Undersheriff Cook moved the resolution to authorize the OHSP strategic traffic enforcement application; the motion was supported and carried.

No additional formal board directives were recorded beyond approval to apply for the OHSP-funded enforcement and equipment reimbursements.

Cook closed by praising deputies for proactive policing and said investigations were ongoing in several cases being forwarded to the prosecutor's office.
