Commissioners approve city request to use county park for July 4 fireworks; city to manage logistics

The Lee County Board of Commissioners on March 3 approved a memorandum of agreement allowing the City of Sanford to use a section of Kiwanis Family Park on the county side as the launch site for the city's July 4 fireworks event.
City staffer Caroline Jeffries reviewed the city's packet, including the vendor contract reviewed by the city's legal team, the vendor's state licensing information, a map of the proposed fallout zone prepared by the fire marshal and a sample certificate of insurance. Jeffries said city staff met with the county fire marshal and that the launch site used in the prior year is adequate for the planned show.
"We will be working with both police and fire to ensure that all areas of the event are covered and safe," Jeffries said. She also described plans to increase lighting, add traffic control at crossings and partner with a local trolley vendor to shuttle attendees from offsite parking to the park. The city said the trolley would be provided free of charge by the city for the event.
Commissioners asked procedural questions about contract review and whether the city council had approved the MOA; Jeffries confirmed that signed copies were provided to the county. The board voted to approve the request. Staff said public-safety measures and vendor licensing remain part of the city's responsibility under the agreement.
