Senate adopts resolution recognizing International Women's Day

SACRAMENTO — The California State Senate unanimously adopted Senate Resolution 19 on Thursday recognizing March 8 as International Women's Day and urging continued action on gender parity and equity.
Senator Aisha Wahab presented the resolution and called for accelerating gender parity across economic participation, education, health and political empowerment. "As we think about this year's theme, Accelerate Action, we should be examining our ability to accelerate gender parity," Wahab said. She asked the chamber for an aye vote.
Members from across the aisle and multiple caucuses spoke in support. Senator Durazo referenced historical labor organizing and the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire as part of the origins of International Women's Day; Senator Blakespear highlighted journalist Claire Hollingworth as an example of women's contributions in a male-dominated profession; Senator Ochoa Bogue recounted her path from educator to state senator; and Senator Small Cuevas noted the day also coincides with Black Women's History Month.
After floor discussion, the clerk recorded "Ayes 34, Nos 0," and SR 19 was adopted. Sponsors described the resolution as a bipartisan recognition intended to celebrate achievements and continue work toward parity in pay, representation and education.
SR 19 is a ceremonial resolution and does not change law or appropriate funds; senators used the remarks to highlight policy areas they said deserve continued legislative attention.
