SACRAMENTO — The California State Senate unanimously adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 30 on Thursday to recognize Women in Construction Week and to call attention to workforce development efforts for women in construction trades.
Senator Small Cuevas, presenting the resolution on behalf of the Legislative Women's Caucus, said women remain underrepresented in construction despite recent gains. "Women make up nearly half of California's workforce, but earn only 82¢ for every dollar paid to a man," Small Cuevas said on the floor, adding that Black and Latino women face larger gaps. She noted that apprenticeship grants have distributed "about $25,000,000" to increase opportunities and that women's share in the trades has risen from about 4% two decades ago to roughly 11% today.
Senator Rubio and others spoke in support of the resolution, urging increased pathways through vocational training and apprenticeships. Following brief floor discussion, the clerk recorded "Ayes 34, Nos 0," and the resolution was adopted.
Sponsors framed the measure as both a recognition of progress and a call to continue investments in training and apprenticeship programs that improve wages and economic mobility for women in construction.
