SACRAMENTO — The California State Senate unanimously adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 26 on Thursday, recognizing March 3–6 as National School Breakfast Week.
Senator Becker, standing in for Senator Weber Pearson, presented the measure on the floor and highlighted research on student outcomes tied to school breakfast programs. "Research shows students who participate in school breakfast programs score an average 17.5% higher...on standardized math tests," Becker said, noting that breakfast participation is associated with higher attendance and cognitive performance.
Becker described program innovations such as grab-and-go services and breakfast in the classroom as ways to increase participation and emphasized the role of school meal programs as a nutritional lifeline for students lacking consistent access to nutritious food at home. He asked members for an aye vote and the resolution passed by unanimous recorded vote: "Ayes 34, Nos 0. The resolution is adopted."
The resolution is a ceremonial recognition rather than a statutory change; senators used the debate to note local efforts to provide free meals during school breaks and to reference the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program for eligible elementary schools.
SCR 26 will stand as a formal recognition by the Legislature marking the importance of school breakfast for student readiness and attendance.
